Domain Names

Domain Names are the calling card, or 'address' to your web site.  Throughout the tutorials, we will refer to 'www.yourdomain.com' as a generic reference, but the domain is indeed yours!

Choosing a Domain Name

There are several things to consider when searching and choosing for a domain name.

  • Be sure to choose a name that will be easy to remember.
  • Try to keep the length of your domain reasonable (remember, people that send you email or visit your site will have more room for error if the domain name is long).
  • Try to avoid hyphens in your domain name.
  • Try to stick with '.com' domains,  use '.net" if you must.
Registering Your Domain Name

It is VERY important that you are organized when securing your domain name.  You should purchase your domain name yourself (do not have a parent or employee do this for you).  The person that registers the domain name has control over the domain and it can be very difficult for you to renew or move your domain name in the future.

Things to remember:
  • Keep an email and print out copies of all of your domain name information.
  • Remember what web site you purchased your domain name from.
  • Remember your user name and password.
  • Remember to renew your domain (annually).

If Cheer Design has secured your domain name for you, we take the worry out of it.  We will automatically renew your domain each year for you and keep all of your domain information in your file for you to access at any time.

Transferring a Domain Name

If you do not own your domain (if it is registered to another person such as a former partner, a coach or parent) you will want to have them transfer the ownership of the domain to you.  Contact us if you would like assistance in transferring the ownership of your domain to your name.
